Facts From 1954 - Marilyn Monroe Marries Joe DiMaggio
Even during the honeymoon in Japan , Monroe was requested to travel to Korea to entertain American troops - which she duly complied. Back home things didn`t get much better when in September there was a big bust up during the filming of Billy Wilder`s "The Seven Year Itch." Monroe was filmed standing over a subway grate with air blowing up her skirt in the presence of onlookers and the press - and of course her very unhappy husband. One month later in October 1954 and just 274 days after their wedding they were divorced. Monroe claimed in her filing that she had suffered from "mental cruelty" from her husband. Despite their parting they remained friends and after her death on 5th August 1962 from a drug overdose DiMaggio arranged her funeral and sent flowers to her grave weekly until his own death in 1999.
